I remember reading in Bluff ages ago that Channing spoke to the guys at the Crown in Melbourne about short-handed play at the Aussie Millions... they asserted that 6-Max Games lose players faster and this means the dealing cost is not a problem. Mike's figures in his article back this up.
Not much you can do about total event capacity though, apart from making sure you allow late registration/alternates. I'm not going to be the one calling for poker rooms to invest in tables designed for 6 players that would allow them to take up so much space. This is clearly impractical but a possible answer.
IMHO the problem with short-handed cash games is more the casual/social nature of live games and the process of filling seats - in a raked rather than session charged environment why wouldn't operators want 6 max games?
I often play in live games that although they have 9 seats there is usually only 6 of us playing - an empty seat which is in the process of getting filled, on guy at the bar and one out smoking a cig.

Are we sure its true that 6-seat games rake less per hour than 9-seat games?
I thought the short handed games would play slightly quicker and pots should be contested with more of a stack more frequently. They both only rake 1 hand at a time. _________________ http://www.alexbowler.com |

We don't operate a full time card club so our sample size is not huge but from what we have seen over the past 3 years at the European Short-Handed Poker Championships the 6 Max games rake considerably less at the same levels as full ring.
Our cash game supervisors have noticed that there are a lot more pots taken down pre-flop with the short-handed live games whereas in full ring it is rare for there not to be a flop.
This only bears true for NLH, in Omaha it rakes similar as flops are seen more often.
However this would not put us off from a business point of view, with 6 Max you can have 2 tables running with 10-12 players where with a similar number of players you only get 1 full ring one.
6 Max games would need to rake 60% or less than a full ring one does for it to become an issue. _________________ European Short-Handed Poker Championships

| Just for your information we have one six max cash game table at the new Hippodrome poker room in Leicester Square, we are interested to see how much interest there is out there for this format! |
