|
|
As alot of you will be aware, we recently had a new member posting here asking to be staked. Fortunately it was fairly easy to identify him as being less than honest but this may not always be the case...
Some other details about that particular guy can be found HERE (Thanks Rainbow Warrior).
This particular scammer has a history of making multiple accounts and building up a posting history and trust before asking for monies.
Thankfully THMF has for the most part stayed under the radar as regards being a possible target from these types of people but I do fear that we may become more targeted in the future as similar types of people stumble accross the staking threads here. I wouldn't be shocked if our most recent visitor comes back under another guise or three/more and in all honesty I am expecting it at some point...
I know most people here don't send money around willy nilly but please make sure to use extreme caution before sending money to anyone you havn't met in person or isn't part of the 'old boys network' on this site, even if they have a hundred, two hundred or more posts over a period of several months or more...
And now....
A funny!

I don't stake anyone I haven't met, still not fool proof but less likely to be scammed.

Poker vampires the only ones of their kind to actually request stakes...

Getting it in writing is also important.

- I swapped 5% with Marc Wright aka dean23price in the EPT Berlin Main Event.
- Marc goes on to final table which is good for 97,000€
- Marc leaves after busting back for the UK without speaking or messaging me.
- Marc claims he does not have 100% of himself and is therefore unwilling to pay me the full 5% which we agreed to swap.
- I am offered 3000€ instead of the full 4850€ he is owe me.
- Marc repeatedly says he will transfer the money to me and fails to do so.
- Marc offers to make smaller payment (2000$ = 32.9% of what we agreed to swap) multiple times and as yet has still failed to do so. |

Staking a player is usually where one or more people put up the tournament entry fees (or bankroll for cashgames) for a player to play and winnings are split (frequently 50/50). There can be different conditions on whether expenses are included, previous losses get deducted before winnings are divided etc.
http://www.pocketfives.com/articles/s...e-staking-396790/
In the case of the Mob/Genting sponsorship scheme winnings are split 50/50 and there is no make-up (ie losing in a previous event doesn't stand against you and isn't a debt).
Buying a stake in a players action is somewhat different. In this case one or more people will buy a share in a players results, usually at a premium (or players will swap a percentage) and winnings are paid out to the investors on a pro rata basis. It is not dissimilar to buying shares (stock) in a company. If the player/company makes a profit, an investor with 10% of the "action" will get 10% of the profit as well as their stake returned. 100% profit = money doubled. etc
In the case of people doing this, a (proven winning) player may well sell their action at (for example) 1.25 where every $125 invested gets you a $100 share of what they're selling. So, say it's a $1000 package. $125 would get you 10%. At the end the player has won and has $3000. Your 10% is worth $300.
But maybe he's lost $500, so you'll only get 10% ie $50 back. Or maybe he's lost it all and you get nothing back.
In both types of deal (not counting Hendon Mob sponsorship), it is important to understand that you are trusting money to someone on the internet that may or may not be genuine. If they don't keep their end of the bargain, then what? |
