I play one new game every five years. Last was Half Life 2 (and Portal). Wow! Before that GTA3. Oh I played Max Payne at some point, that was good. I'm finished with Championship Manager.
What's best from about 2008-2010, thank you?
Okay, I'm getting Painkiller and Amnesia The Dark Descent, which should take care of first personers. Starcraft 2 looks like a modern Command and Conquer Red Alert so I'll try that. Just Cause 2 should do for sandbox, right?

It's very subjective and there are loads of games, but for me the standouts in 2010 in no particular order were
Fallout New Vegas open world post apocalypse RPG/shooter
Batman Arkham Asylum beat-em-up/mystery/action
Mass Effect 2 story and character heavy scifi RPG/shooter
Witcher 2 story based adult RPG fantasy
If you're prepared to look at late 2010/early 2011 and upcoming titles
Batman Arkham City
Mass Effect 3
Skyrim
Max Payne 3
Or go back a few years and look at classics you've missed
Witcher Enhanced Edition
Rome Total War
Assassins' Creed II
Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic I & II
I could go on. Metacritic is quite a good place to get a balanced set of reviews.
I have zero interest in football.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, if you are willing to put up with the difficult levelling system, will keep you going for ages.
Amnesia, brave man. Never played anything as scary as that, really well made.
Starcraft 2 is probably not worth it, the game is all about multiplayer online. Don't get me wrong, the single player is decent, but the dedication to get to a reasonable standard so that you are winning is quite high.
I pretty much agree with what Leus has said, although I think Fallout 3 is better than New Vegas, but they are both still very good.
Football games are only good with friends and beers, give them a miss.

New Vegas because of playing blackjack in leopard-print pyjamas, lucky hat and shades. But Fallout 3 is roughly as good, I agree.
Oblivion loses it in the late game for me (compared with, say, Skyrim, or ME2 which I would choose ahead of any of my list), when the levelling system and repetitive endgame killed the buzz for me. I hear it can be modded into a very good game though.

It depends. You need the latest drivers for sound and video cards. Steam will install video drivers for you if you check the menus in the steam app. To play modern games you need a reasonably decent graphics card, but other problems do obviously crop up.

For Christmas I bought myself Star Wars: The Old Republic (Best MMORPG?) Skyrim (Best RPG?) and Battlefield 3 (Best Online FPS?) but haven't got around to even loading one of them up yet, because I'm still playing Quake Live for free. Classic pure FPS gaming.
