Trying to trace my family line back further than my grandad on my Dads side.
I know my grandad was born around 1912 but no exact dates, its a bit annoying as the uk census is available from 1911 which is obviously a year before his birth.
My Dad has passed over so i cant get any info there.
Tried the obvious searches but am a bit of a novice
What i really need is an exact birth date for him then obviously i could request a birth certificate and on that would be father mother etc...and the plot would thicken

any ideas guys?

findmypast.co.uk - if search doesn't work you can browse through every birth around the right time with the right surname.

ancestry.co.uk has similar resources but I don't think their digitised images are quite so clear to read

if use freebmd for 1912 it will give you the mothers maden name , you should be then able to check for marriage record & census records & find the family

when we started doing family history 12 years ago the advice we were given was to start with grandparents birth record , then we had to use old film to search the records

now on ancestry & http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/home/index you may find someone has done a tree on your line ,need to check them because there is so many mistakes made

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/cer...cates/default.asp to order your records online

the above is my problem, bought some credits on ancestry.co.uk but according to my sums age at death and year born hes not showing up either in births or deaths, neither is my nan and i have her exact birth date and maiden name so i find myself repeating processes with different searches and wasting credits....even in the early 1900's it was illegal not to register a birth??

Sidenote i did find their marriage logged in 1927 but obviously this wont help me going back a generation from them

It's very unlikely that it's missing - if you searched for it rather than browsed then it could be a problem with whoever did the transcribing. Even if it seems like an obvious name there could still be a problem with the quality of the record which they did the transcribing from.

I wouldn't take it for granted that you do know any this for sure - people lie. When I researched my ex's family tree we found that her grandad had always lied about his age and he was 3 years older then he always said, but it was alright because her grandmother was 5 years older then she had always claimed Very Happy

Now that freebmd has much better coverage - do your searches on their first. And use wildcards and ranges - that way you spend less money. If that doesn't work it might need the brute force of just browsing through a lot of records.

would totaly agree with this , my grandfather born Islington on 1901 census is listed as Well & not Webb , on some surnames the can be 30 or so variations on the name

like Jon said , you will find some things that they forgot to mention like my wifes great grandfather having second family

some areas & some names are bad to search & if you want help , I would imagine Jon or myself would look online for you , you should be able to go back to early 1800 , before then its a bit hit or miss because only having parish records to go on

From what you said it is tricky to confirm the right entry - to do so you cross reference from other information you know.

If you can confirm the death's then you can definitely get the right GRO entry for that and on find my past for something that recent it will have a confirmation of age (it might be the age that was relayed by whoever registered the death so it might not be gospel - but it does give you a very good indication).

The other good indication you have is their marriage - if you're sure of your facts on that one then you can order a copy of the wedding certificate. As well as the bride and grooms ages it can also have their middle names (which is only handy if the index for their birth was registered with them as well - but it does mean you can rule some out because the middle initial doesn't match), but it also has the father's name and occupation. With his name and their names you can then look for them in the 1911 census.

Once you get on to the censuses things get a LOT easier - the rest of the 20th century is much harder to verify compared to 1841 - 1911.

I'll have a quick look for her - but I think your next step is going to be to get the death registration index (I prefer findmypast for that but I think ancestry basically have the same records), and to get a copy of the marriage certificate if you think that's right.
