First I will apologise as I am not good at writing reports. I will try to be as objective as I can though in my feedback on this trial coaching session by TIPS.
Got to the Fox in plenty of time, no chance in having an early drink, all the staff seemed to be focused on standing round empty tables. No idea what that was all about.
Paul Z make me us welcome and is a good host for this venture, he sat down the 7 who had turned up and explained the way it would all work. Shame there were 2 no shows, however this gave the 7 of us better value for our £65.
Scenario is we all get 20k in chips, starting blinds 25/50. Every 10-20 mins the blinds went up and as the event progressed the emphasis is making your bet sizes and strategy around your stack, relative stacks and blind levels.
First couple of hands were raise and take it down, hand 3 made for interesting viewing. I am utg +2, raise to 225 with JJ, button raises to 825, BB calls, I flat.
Flop JT2 (2 clubs) BB checks, I check, Button makes it 1200, BB folds, I raise to 3500, Button shoves, I snap and he turns over 97c. Naturally a club on the river and I am out. The table encourage the button to explain if he plays this way in a "real" tournie? He says, yes. I ask him to let me know where and when he is to play his next live events.
Fortunately I get my 20k back and the session continues. Some interesting hands, some clearly playing this for real, some just want to be in most hands rather than make the correct play.
Fortunately we had several very interesting hands which were flagged for later review, players over playing top pair, some making hero folds, some where they fall in love with AA and lose their stack.
The computer takes care of the cards dealt to each player, Paul's right hand man notes the bet sizes on a tablet and Paul is making notes for later.
We played in this way for 2 hours or so, blinds ending up at 400/800 with 100 ante so we experienced a large part of the range of a typical STT. Final 10 mins with the rule if you call off your stack you are out, sadly no big decisions in this level.
After a short break, we discussed some of the hands from memory and Paul's notes, each of us told our VPIP & PFR, this ranged from 59/45 to something in the region of 10/5.
Each hand flagged is then uploaded to the computer and we go through some of the notable hands, we are given feedback on;
a. bet sizing
b. strategy, ie calling vs raising
c. position
d. image and how to exploit it
We are encouraged to discuss our thoughts on each play we had made, ie "why did you raise", "what was your plan", etc.
From this feedback, I took away 2 very useful lessons (I can't share these two as I play live with some of you
We were welcome to ask for any hand to be replayed, sadly we ran out of time as there were plenty more hands which could have generated interesting debate.
+ve comments
Really well run session.
Excellent value for money although I believe the price may increase to £100 per session.
Technology in use really makes a difference.
Good debate on most aspects of the game at the level we all probably play.
Everyone had the chance to learn something and make some small improvements in their game.
Things that possibly need focusing on
Needs to be more competitive as you were not accountable for your mistakes, eg in reality some of the all in plays would not have been made in a real situation. I believe this competitiveness will be introduced at future sessions.
If you are uber tight or totally card dead you are less likely to get good value from the session IMO.
Time will always contrain how many hands you can review, but having the recordings to take away would allow review at a later date. (I know this is being worked on)
Do I recommend more HM members to attend one of these sessions? Yes! |

Thank you for your report.
As you know we like to improve if we can and can only do this from player feed back.
We are working on the improvements that you mentioned and look forward to seeing you at a nother session |

Thinly veiled brag, but just took down the $4k guarantee MTT on Genting.
A couple of adjustments in my game since I attended the first of Paul's sessions at the Fox 2 weeks ago made all the difference. £65 well spent, thank you team TIPS! |
