Urgh - 2 more horses put down again this year... Synchronised & According to Pete _________________ Not surprised Xavi's been replaced. His pass completion rate was only 89%. Useless. |

Every year I say I won't bet on it, and then I cave in.
I'm a bit soft when it comes to animals (big g@y vegetarian) so maybe I should give it a miss. _________________ @oneshotbobby on twitter |

The horses love this race and every other race of the season. It's what they know and what they're trained for. Probably why they carry on when they unseat or fall. We could always stop racing/jumping/riding horses and have them become extinct i suppose....... for me, the very small minority that die doing something they enjoy outweighs the option of not racing/riding them. Just a shame when it happens _________________ Fortune favours only the prepared mind!

i take the point, but is there an argument here that the fences could be a bit lower and a bit safer? Everyone gets to enjoy themselves and a bit less carnage?
Good point re un-seated ones though. _________________ @oneshotbobby on twitter |

It's a moot point, this gets brought up every year a horse dies/gets put down at the National, especially on Becher's.

The stats really put it into perspective. I'm really indifferent about the whole thing, however, I still don't fully understand why they put a horse down after a fall, I don't see why they can't just give it surgery and then stud it. |

| horses have evolved to be on all four legs, it is cruel on them to either be laying down or only able to stand on 3 legs in the time it takes to heal |

Makes it sound like we shouldn't make a sport of putting them in situations where they're likely to sustain those injuries. |

I think if you've NEVER had a bet on a horse or NEVER gone racing then you are welcome to the opinion that it should be banned, otyherwise you are a hypocrite IMO.
It's awful and very sad when it happens but horses break down when they are running with no fences involved or just in their field. _________________ Nobody likes Grasses |

Thats right......a large number of horses suffer fatal injuries away from the race course or from racing full stop for that matter every year and it never gets reported and why would it. But the National is news and on everyones lips. Unfortunately the physical make up of horses dictate that leg injuries are always very likely whether they race or not. These horses get the best attention, the best treatment and literally the best of everything.
Unfortunately private horse owners cannot afford that same level of treatment and tens of thousands of private owners have horses in poor conditions in fields with very uneven and rutted hard ground where even a canter can be dangerous. It isnt't as if these horses are dragged from normal life into racing. They are bred and trained specifically for that purpose and have a life because of it.
Yesterday was a very sad day not just for the owners and people involved but for anyone with an once of feeling and compassion about any living creature. _________________ Poker columnist at www.poker.co.uk |

| weren't some of the horses (last year at least) put on oxygen at the end of the race as well? they may like running but there is surely a limit |

I heard yesterday that they get put down because otherwise they would get pneumonia and die. Not sure how that works tho _________________ Fortune favours only the prepared mind!

Never watched a marathon and saw a runner on oxygen at the finish line? _________________ Nobody likes Grasses |

I am pro Grand National and have been in the past but when listening to what was happening with Synchronised before the race I was shouting at the radio, "don't even think about trying to race". Gutted that no-one stopped them.

Also think that it came too soon after the Gold cup which was an amazing feat and strain.
Sadly it looks like the owners/trainer got carried away with the dream. _________________ Nobody likes Grasses |

I've never seen one with a human on top of them going over jumps and spurring them on, though I'd totally watch that |
