LONDON, May 13 (Reuters) - More than 20 stewards who protected Tottenham Hotspur fans from Spanish police during a UEFA Cup match against Sevilla last month will be presented with awards for bravery on Sunday.
The commendation is usually given for acts of bravery by Metropolitan Police officers and is rarely awarded to civilians. It has never been given to football stewards.
Police superintendent Simon O'Brien said in a statement: 'I witnessed what I can only describe as selfless, brave conduct from the Spurs stewards.
'They consistently acted as go-betweens in an escalating confrontation, I saw them physically protecting fans and being injured themselves. I never saw them flinch in a lengthy violent confrontation - they were a fluorescent protective cushion in the middle of a melee.
'I have no doubt that but for the presence of Spurs stewards we could have experienced far more violence that night.'

The question is why on earth this cowardly Labour government haven't got involved? If Spanish police had attacked large numbers of British tourists after experiencing the same level of provocation they received from Spurs fans (i.e. virtually none) there would be outcry. Why is it different because it was football fans being attacked? Much the same can be said for the Italian police's behaviour in Roma.
The Government, and of course UEFA, are a disgrace.

| I totally agree that the government and the UEFA are a disgrace. There is video footage of the riot police beating a fan in a wheelchair on some forums, yet nothing is being done about it. |

Am sure I saw chairs been thrown by the y!d army.
They can't complain about anything, if you ever actually go to a game you'd know they are now known as the worst fans in the country. |

For football violence, have seen it with my own eyes this year.
My team is not a factor here, but if you must know I support the other team in North London who reguarly play CL football. |

Ok, but they are certainly the worst in the Premiership on a whole.
That's fact. |

Unfortunately he is right. Spurs have had the most active and violent "firm" in the country since about 1990. |
