good news / bad news type night for me last night in nottingham. Played in the 20 rebuy tourney, made 9th and turned 80 stake into 140. hadn't made a final for a month or two so a good nights poker. bad news was I got jumped by 4 lads outside the Casino and got mugged. lost 170, car keys, wallet, cards, driving license, the lot. obviously I'm not the firt poker player to get mugged out side a casino and I won't be the last but I thought I'd remind people to always use the safest parking available (I got into the habit of parking free in the street for convenience rather that paying a couple of quid for the near by car park), always beware of people around you as you leave and if being a chump and loosing all your money isn't enough of a motivation to cut out alcohol from your casino trips, maybe the thought of a four man knife attack might persuade you. given the numbers, the threat of a knife and the fact I got pushed from the street into a small courtyard out of view from the street I was fortunate to get away with a very nasty black eye and some bruised ribs. I'm aware that it could have been much worse. my 8 years martial arts training helped keep me very calm, rational and aware of the risk / reward of resisting and reduced how much damage I took but as I say, I was lucky to end up with the same number of holes as I started with.

Sounds like a complete nightmare. At least you're looking on the bright side in so much that you realise you were lucky. Don't know if you are aware of a murder motivated by robbery of a casino punter in Nottingham last year, link here

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/en...shire/3740124.stm

I personally never feel safe leaving the casino in Luton, have to take a dark alleyway to the supermarket car park, which is a concern.

Adam you r a muppet. If the people who attacked you where in the casino they will have been seen and will be on CCTV. Believe me 4 blokes are not gonna mug a plonker for 140 when they can wait for the winner of the tourny for a couple of grand, yeah OK i needed the money and he was a fence so what, i did the time and learnt it.

More likely you parked your escort in a compromising place, double yellows, dark FREE carpark, down a DARK FREE lane ETC. You got tagged by drug scummers cause of your lack of nouse. May i recommend the fine taxi service the good taxi drivers of Nottingham provide or failing that park your motor somewhere safe and get Giant Haystacks to walk you home.

ALWAYS get the security "bouncer" to escort you to your car from Luton - I wouldn't tangle with him - he's a BIG lad!!!! :)

Yeah, that makes real sense fat boy, because I'm sure everyone will agree that it's worth getting stabbed for 140. Would you really value your own life that cheaply? Post written at 10.22pm, had a drink eh fat boy? Adam, I'm sure you know this anyway but you did the right thing. If there were just one or two of them then maybe it would have been different, but faced with four nobbers with knives just give the dckheads what they want, I'm sure they'll get what's coming to them one day.

They weren't casino punters, they were opportunists. I know parking in the street when there's a cheap safe car park was a stupid habit and I won't be doing that again. If it'd stayed on the street and I was still on my feet I would have fought furiously and am quite confident against multiple attackers. And finally if Fatboy would like to meet me I'd be happy to show him what I can do. I have a wife and daughter and another child on the way and I'm not risking that for 140 when I'm already grounded andthere's three blokes pinning me down.

Good for you... Too many people die trying to be have a go heroes... The news describes these people as brave... They should describe them as stupid. A real tragedy was avoided and that's the main thing. Judging by Fat Boy's posts I wuld say that the fat is in the cerebral area. Don't mind him winding you up... and thanks for the post as it will serve as a reminder to some.

no problem. I teach my students about awareness and being prepared and I certainly encourage a realistic attitude towards any situation they might find themselves in (interesting lesson planned for this week). I realised I was being followed but, even as the attack came (from behind 4 blokes raining blows down on me) I wrongly assumed they were drunk clubbers picking a fight with a lone guy. As I said, standing your ground in a street fight with witnesses bound to be along any second (even at 3am it's a busy area of the City) is one thing but as I got pushed into a dark 8'x4' courtyard, the door shut behind them and 3 guys are kneeling on top of me threatening to stab me if I didn't do as instructed it's a bit late for clever footwork, head movement and a killer left hook. The reason I added a mention that I have some fighting experience was to remind people that ANYONE is a potential target and 4 on 1 with a knife and no witnesses macho bullsht goes out the window and you're drawing dead (pun intended). I have yet to speak to the Gala, but have to say that they were very helpful on the night when I went back for assistance.

Not paying the 2 parking fee in the well lit, secure and CCTV monitored GALA car park was probably a -EV move!

(Though, if you avoid being mugged another 70 visits, it possibly becomes +EV. There must be a formula to work out this).

oh yeah, heads up I'm favourite against alot of hands but in a multiway pot I'm a dog. I shouldn't play the parking for value really. Life's a freezeout. I'm bust / I'm out.

Hi Adam,

I've just started some martial arts training last week and even after one lesson I can see the benefits from a whole number of angles. I suppose your story bth worries and comforts me. That after 8 years training you were clearly able to make the right decision, but that you were powerless to defend yourself. Of course we all realise that such situations can arise where there is nothing we can do, but it is nevertheless worrying.

Fortunately nothing like this has ever happened to me and I can't really imagine how it would affect my confidence. Can I ask how this has affected your confidence and what benefit your training has in helping you recover from a situation where it couldn't help you physically.

On another note had the situation arisen in the street do you still think it would have been the right decision to fight them?

Also, do you feel you made any errors, apart from parking your car down the street.
