Horrible news from Ireland. The Northern Irish Poker Championships were raided by Irish Police tonight.

The organisers moved the event south of the border as poker tournaments have been held in hotels (including this particular hotel) in the republic for several years now without any difficulties with the law.

It would appear the PSNI got talking to their southern counterparts because they were upset at the organisers getting around the law by moving he event across the border.

Players who travelled to the event included betfair qualifiers from the UK and Poland. One player flew directly from the Austrian poker festival especially for this tournament.

I'm not going to give a full rant and would hope I don't need to here but for about ten different reasons this is absolutely despicable. Thanks for the info.

What's happened? I am assuming the tournament has been cancelled. Has any equipment/cash been stolen?

Cracks you up when tax payers money is spent on these kind of raids. Lets leave the murderers, thieves, rapists, etc alone tonight and raid some card players!

Thankfully I didn't travel to the event. I don't believe sufficient reason was given by the police. At least no one has informed me of any. The police arrived at the hotel just one hour before the event was due to start, and threatened to put an objection in the next time the hotels license came up, if the tournament went ahead.

OK, so still disgusting but not exactly a 'raid'. I'm not trying to downplay the abuse of authority here but it's not as bad as what goes in the US.

I'm actually very surprised at the mature way the UK police and Gaming Board were handling the Gutshot/other unlicenced poker clubs until RANK/Grosvenor Casinos started greasing their palms, this appears to be somewhere in between.

Yes, sorry for the use of the word raid. They didn't confiscate anything.
They threatened the hotel with loss of their license if the event went ahead which is laughable conidering about 50 precent of every hotel and pub in Ireland has at some stage in the last four years hosted some form of poker event.

Just to correct a point, this is a new hotel and has never had a poker tournament played in it before.

As it is a new hotel and has no prior good record they were fully justified in not allowing the organiser's to go ahead with the tournament as the local Police threatened them with problems with the renewal of their licence if they allowed it.

What the local police were doing there in the first place though is mystifying as poker tournaments are held in hotels across Ireland every week without so much as a squeak from the guards. In fact the guards make up a good percentage of the field in most events.

My company (Green Joker Poker) have been running live tournaments in Ireland for over 2 years in close proximity to this particular hotel and have in fact booked this hotel for our next Festival in May. We have never had a problem with the law and before we started running tournaments we checked the law out and according to more than one barrister running a tournament where the organiser takes a one off fee is perfectly legal.

It was based on this advice and our dealings with the hotel in question that I recommended this hotel to JPC poker as an alternative to their venue in the North. As such I feel a degree of responsiblility in this matter. I can only assume that the Northern counterparts of the local men in blue were in touch and requested this event not go ahead as many such events have been run in the area with far more publicity than this one without any intervention.

Obviously this means we need to seek assurance from the local police that such an intervention will not happen should we run our scheduled tournament in May. If they will not give us written confirmation then we will have to change the venue.

Hats off to JPC poker who dealt with the situation in the best manner they could. They even gave people an extra 100 refund when returning entry funds which although may not seem much to the individuals concerned, it is still a lot when added up and something a lot of organisers would not do. I am sure they rightly feel persecuted and rightly they should.

I was present at the City North Hotel when the Gardai came and stopped the NI Poker Championship, organised by JPC Poker, and I could not believe what I was hearing. My views are too that the fascist PSNI had a word with their fascist friends in the South, and had this tournament stopped. After all, when the people on this island have stopped shooting each other and bombing everywhere, the boys in blue have to justify their jobs and the tax payers money used to pay them - it's easier to manipulate the law and bust a friendly game of poker than it is to catch the rapists, burglars, joyriders, etc. Poker has been played for hundreds of years and a few Bible bashing cops are hardly going to stop the game being played overnight in order to earn some stripes for themselves.

My initial reaction to being told that the tournament was cancelled was anger - I had just wasted a journey. But, fair play to the JPC Poker staff, everyone was reimbursed and an offer of an additional 100, to which I declined. I know that the tournament was going to be a great one, and I was really looking forward to playing, but alas these things aren't meant to be.

JPC Poker are the best poker operators in Northern Ireland by a mile, and I sincerely hope that hassle from the cops does not dissuade it from poker. I think that JPC can bounce back, and I call on all poker players to support JPC and all other poker operators being hassled to stop operations.

Good luck JPC and I will see you for a friendly game again soon.

Meanwhile, I am going to a nice friendly game elsewhere later, and whilst I would love to announce where it's at, I obviously don't want to see any more peelers for the rest of the weekend.

Sorry Mike, when I first heard the news I didn't have all the details and thought it was your regular spot.

I hope this doesn't have a knock on effect for future events, and I really hope JPC press for legal action.
