Tournament Directors

You are the Tournament Director Series 2: What No Flop?

The situation: there is a pot limit Omaha cash game going on in your local club. Two players contest a pot on the flop and then instead of dealing a turn card the dealer takes the flop and muck and starts shuffling obviously in a day dream. The player’s can’t agree what the flop was and there are no cameras.

If the flop could not be verified I would call the hand dead and refund all monies to players in the pot including those who bet and had folded.

If you can’t reset the flop 100%, I would decide a split pot among the remaining players

Honestly, live games are different than tournaments as the hand only affects the players in the pot so the decision here is fine with me but in a tournament everyone is affected so the flop and muck gets reshuffled and flopped again.

I've have to declare the hand null and void and give them back their money.

I would agree with this ruling as to put up another flop would be unfair on the players as they would have bet on their hands on the previous flop and not this new one. A split pot would be the fairest option.

What actually happened would be the best decision in this scenario. Split the pot.

Mob Verdict

This actually happened in the Victoria casino. There was only about £40 in the pot and they agreed to split it to make things easy.

In a cash game this is a relatively easy decision. You would split the pot between any players that still had live cards. We don’t agree that players who have folded should get a refund of monies contributed – that would only happen if there was a foul deck.

Matt points out that in a live tournament this couldn’t happen though as the other players are affected. In this situation the muck would be reshuffled and we would get another flop. Pre-flop action remains and bets on the original flop are returned to the players. The players that have live cards will then continue as normal.
