Mob League Event Final - Wednesday 30 November 2005
After the 12 league events we had our final table, the winner takes all tournament for the trip to Vegas. Well, not quite winner takes all as first matter of the day was to confirm the deal which had been agreed on the forum, 10% of any winnings from the WPT event would be split amongst those who didn't make it..
Alanc started on the button, Scoobysnacks the small blind, Grumbledook in the big blind, and living upto his name complaining about this, having to put in a full 20 chips out of the 10,000 chip starting stacks first hand! On his left was Reevio, then MrsSplash, Pommy, StackBasher, Stoogster, Angry_Badger and finally top of the league finisher P3rcy. The first hand is folded to Angry_Badger who makes it 80 to play with the mighty J,4os and takes down the first pot when he flops two pair. With the stacks this deep some speculative hands are sure to be played early, but no-one is going to want to commit any significant amount of chips without a monster. Indeed, it's 15 minute before anyone has even lost 1/20th of their starting stack, and only then when Alanc's pocket kings get cracked.
With so much play in the tournament, the first hour is more banter between players and spectators than stack threatening poker. MrsSplash wants to know if the $1,500 entry can be exchanged for Spearmint Rhino vouchers; Barny points out that it's for a multi-table tournament, not multi-table dancers… We do have an elimination before the first break however. Barny is complaining that they're all playing too tight and he wants to see some action, the table obliges the next hand: Angry_Badger open limps in early position for 30 chips and is followed into the pot by P3rcy, Alanc and Scoobysnacks before Grumbledook bumps it up to 250 holding Q Q . Angry_Badger and Alanc both call and we have three to a flop of Q A T . It's checked to the raiser who bets out 300 which Angry_Badger minimum raises to 600. Alanc calls both the raises and Grumbledook raises a further 1,200 which is called in both places. The turn is the 2 and Angry_Badger checks, now Alanc puts in his first bet, 2,000 chips. Grumbledook moves all-in for 4,585 more and Angry_Badger passes. Alanc has J K for the flopped nuts to Grumbledooks set of queens. The J on the river is no good for Grumbledook and he is first to exit. Alanc takes a 20,000 pot and the chip lead going into the first break on 22,135. In second is Angry_Badger on 11,605, who made the chips he lost in that pot back with interest, forcing Scoobysnacks out of a substantial pot on the turn, whilst Pommy and Scoobysnacks are the shorter stacks at the table on 8,100 and 7,030 respectively.
20 minutes after the break ends, The_Brief joins the crowd at the rail and Barny gives him a tongue in cheek summary of the first hour and a half of deep stack play “You haven't missed much. Alan doubled up with the nuts and has passed ever since. The rest are waiting in the long grass for the crap shoot later.” A few minutes after and there’s some serious action though. With the blinds at 75/150 there’s no raise and four see a T 7 3 flop. It’s checked through to Pommy who bets out 450 holding A, T giving him TPTK. Scoobysnacks has a monster draw and after the other two fold he reraises to 1,300 holding 8 9 . The turn is the Q and this time both check. The river brings the 2 and Scoobysnacks has missed both his flush and straight draws and is left without so much as a pair. He bets out 1,800 into the 3200 pot but is called and is crippled. Ten minutes later and his AKs doesn’t improve against MrsSplash’s pocket queens and he is out in 9th. Next hand it looks like we could have another out when Reevio and Angry_Badger get all in on a 7 8 A flop but they flip over A Q and A Q and the pot is chopped.
With the blinds now up to 100/200 some decent pots are starting to be built up. After Reevio in the big blind puts in a big reraise against Stoogster there’s a pot of almost 4,000 and a flop of 4 5 2 . Reevio bets out another 2,775 and Stoogster calls. The turn is 8 and Reevio bets out 5,555. Stoogster thinks about it but gives up the hand and Reevio is up to within a couple of thousand of Alanc. On the last hand before the second break he clashes again with Reevio, this time all the chips are in preflop with Reevio holding pocket aces against Stoogster’s A K . Stoogster is out in 8th and Reevio takes the lead:
Reevio 30,062
Alanc 25,010
Pommy 18,200
Stackbasher 12,585
Angry_Badger 3,192
Mrs_Spash 1,395
MrsSplash doesn’t give up. She opts just to complete the small blind then pushes in on a 9 3 6 flop to make Pommy and P3rcy fold, she’s in again with A, J to Angry_Badger’s pocket 4s to double up and leave Angry_Badger at just over 1,000. He’s out when he pushes in with A 7 and finds Reevio in the small blind with red ladies. Reevio extends his lead flopping the flush holding A 5 and is paid off all the way by Stackbasher, before giving them back to P3rcy, doubling him up with Q 9 to P3rcy’s hooks. MrsSplash is able to make a lot of small raises and without the chips behind her to be bluffed out finds plenty of folders to work her way back up to a more playable stack.
Stackbasher is out in 6th, pushing on the button with pocket 4s and being called by Alanc with A 9 . Alan flops a 9. His chips are soon in Reevio’s hands though, not being able to beat his pocket tens on a board of 3 4 4 J A after some heaving raising earlier in the hand. Meanwhile the other short stack MrsSplash doubles up putting an awful beat on Pommy, pushing in on a 2 9 T with 4 4 . Pommy calls with J J and MrsSplash spikes the 4 on the river.
P3rcy is out in 5th when his cowboys run into MrsSplash’s pocket rockets, and after one of the spectators (a certain Mr. Dempsey) predicts Reevio will blow his lead (this is apparently known as ‘doing a Reevio’) it looks like it might happen when Pommy reraises him all in on a A 4 7 flop and makes him pass to take 8,000 from his ex-40,000 stack. When MrsSplash seemingly tries the same thing on a Q 8 A flop it doesn’t come off though – Reevio not backing down this time and pushing for another 30,000. Reevio is back upto 40,000 with MrsSplash on 27,000, Pommy on 17.5K and Alanc with just under 17,000. Alanc, never afraid to stick his chips in if he thinks he’s ahead, and presumably putting MrsSplash on the queen of spades after a flop of K A 3 holding A 2 , got into a raising war on the turn of 8 . He obviously didn’t put Splash on the 9 too however as all the chips went in. Alanc, who held the lead in the league for longer than anyone else, out in 4th.
With three left the stacks were roughly:
MrsSplash 53,000
Reevio 33,000
Pommy 13,000
and the blinds at 400/800. Just a couple of minutes later Pommy, looking to double up, was unable to overcome Reevio’s ace high and heads up it was MrsSplash in the lead with a 10,000 advantage, 55K – 45K.
After 5 minutes of heads-up play Reevio had reversed the situation and now held the lead himself, finding pocket 8s in the small blind he chose to just to complete. MrsSplash made it 2,000 from the big blind and now Reevio made his move, shoving all in for 56,740. Except MrsSplash had pocket aces. Oops. So cruelly for MrsSplash, who must have considered the tournament pretty much won now, the flop came Q 8 6 , the turn was 5 and she was drawing to 2 outs on the river. She had managed it earlier holding pocket 4s but this time the river was Q to give Reevio the full house and a ticket to Vegas.
1 Reevio
2 MrsSplash
3 Pommy
4 Alanc
5 P3rcy
6 Stackbasher
7 Angry_Badger
8 Pommy
9 Stoogster
10 Grumbledook
