Poker News Round-up: Week #37September is meant to be a transient time in the poker world. Everyone is starting to recover from the open-wallet surgery inflicted on many during the WSOP and as bankrolls are replenished, the tournament schedule starts to fill back up at a rapid rate of knots. WCOOP, WPT, EPT, EPO, WSOPE and before you know it, the WSOP circuit too. The EPT event recently visited Barcelona. For any recreational players that are going to take one shot at an EPT event, I would imagine this has to be on the shortlist. Carter Phillips will probably have a life-long soft spot for Barcelona now as in his first professional year he walked away with €850k and the trophy. 2nd place went to Marc Goodwin who earlier was subjected to a pretty rough clock call in a key spot. Marc took it in his stride though, and I guess the €500k will help him move on without too many further problems. Roland de Wolfe also managed to make the headlines even when not winning by falling victim to the ‘bluff-call’ from Tobias Reinkemeier. Villain made a super-thin call down with Q-hi and Roland rather sheepishly flashed a King. When challenged to show both cards (villain realises at this point he is losing, he called to beat a particular bluff, but not the actual bluff Roland had..)Roland opted for the turbo-muck instead, leaving the scene all set for villain’s fist-pump tabling of Q-hi and a claim on the pot. Despite some fishing around in the bottom of the muck, the subsequent ruling awarded the hand to Q-hi. The WPT is visiting Cyprus at the moment, no doubt many of the ‘big-name’ players attracted, or recruited, to play this event will be blissfully unaware of the politics behind the location. While many were happy that a non-North American venue was sanctioned to put some more credibility into the W of WPT, many Cypriots were less than happy about the location, given that Northern Cyprus contains an occupying force of Turkish troops. The tournament is nearing the final table at the time of writing with notables including Layne Flack, Huck Seed and Nenad Medic all in the mix. Meanwhile in Atlantic City, the Borgata hosts their Poker Open culminating in the WPT Championship Event with a vastly reduced $3k buy in. On UK soil, the GUKPT moved to Cardiff and omnipresent tour players Karl Mahrenholz and Iwan Jones finished on top of the pile. Karl slowly rectified the 3-1 chip deficit that he found himself in and somehow managed to make AK stand up against AQ to leave Jones mortally wounded. Karl picked up his first major tournament success and a shade less than £40k into the bargain. The WCOOP is now in full swing and with buyins ranging from modest right through to nosebleed amounts and several events a day, many players will be praying that if they are ever going to have a good month to go on an insane heater, this would be an ideal month to choose. The most significant event so far was the $10k high roller event. While $600k+ was sent towards Sweden, John Duthie managed a very creditable final table and $75k for his troubles. Whilst in the online domain, many eyes will pointing towards Washington as the numerous Bills that have internet gambling in the title or as a bolt-on to something else all look likely to be up for debate shortly. Given that the UIGEA is set to be fully implemented in December without any further intervention, just about everyone in the poker world will be hoping that some sort of sensible compromise can be reached and that a viable roadmap is created that will drive through a plan to legalise and regulate online poker to the satisfaction of all concerned. |
