Gardener and Mathews clash again

This time Rory Mathews makes the call of Gardener’s 5400 preflop all-in with just AJ to Gardener’s AK. “Your skill against my luck” says Gardener, referring to previous pots he’s played and got away with despite having the worst of it. The board brings down first a pair of twos on the flop and then a pair of 8s made on the river for a split pot.

Game over man. game over

Returning from the break and the players have reached a deal. With the blinds getting very large and the chip counts close an equal split has been decided upon, with Colin Wu declared the nominal winner and taking the grand final seat!

Colin Wu, Robin Yiltalo and Rory Mathews all collect £20,500.

Mathews v Yiltalo

Rory Mathews made it 36k under the gun and Robin Yiltalo called on the button. The blinds let them fight it out. Mathews led out for 40k on a flop of 2 5 5 and Yiltalo called. Mathews checked the 2 on the turn and Yiltalo fired 80k into the middle, which Mathews called. The 3 on the river was checked by Mathews and Yiltalo asked for a count of his opponent’s remaining chips. Eventually he checked and Mathews showed A J which was enough to scoop a big pot against Yiltalo’s K 6. Thoughtful stuff from both players.

Rough justice for Lynch

John Lynch raised 28k in the cut-off and Rory Mathews re-raised to 100k total. Lynch wasted no time in moving all-in and a dejected Mathews asked for the count. With only 58k to call, it was obligatory for Mathews and he counted out the chips saying “I don’t have much but that’s the way I play.” J J for Lynch, A 7 for Mathews. A board of 6 A 8 K T spelled an ugly exit for Lynch for 7th place and £2800.

Wright doubles, DeMarco out

Rory Mathews raises to 100,000 from the button but neither of the blinds have that much. Nick Wright calls from 39,700 and Ramon DeMarco calls for a little less.
Mathews has A 8 , Wright J K and DeMarco 6 2
The 4 J 7 flop is good for Wright and he seals things after J 5 hit.
Wright is back in the hunt whilst DeMarco exits.

Welsh conquered

Rory Mathews raised in early position and big blind John Welsh moved all-in. It was an easy call for Mathews with A K but Welsh’s Q J were live. The board ran out 5 6 T 4 7 and Welsh went out in 15th place.

Hussein toppled

We’ve been playing hand for hand and unsurprisingly Rory Mathews on the big stack has been putting in several raises.
He makes it 16,000 from the button and Rizwan Hussein calls from the small blind. After Nick Wright folds his big blind we see a flop of 5 6 4
Hussein checks and Mathews goes all in. That is called straight away by Hussein with 4 7 . Mathews does actually have a hand but he needs to avoid several outs. The Q Q of Mathews holds up as the turn and river are both jacks.
Hussein out.

Monster pot for Matthews

Crazy action as Neil Stewart raises to 11000, John Welsh re-raises to 31000, Rory Matthews moves all in from the button and Rizwan Hussein joins in by shoving his last 10000 in as well.
The action is back to Neil Stewart who gets the rest of his chips in and there is a massive pot already as Welsh now has to decide. He already has a third of his chips invested in this pot but everyone is representing big big hands. After much shaking of the head he passes and we see the three remaining hands.
Stewart A K
Matthews A A
Hussein 6 8

The board fills up J 3 8 Q J Hussein’s call on the assumption that there would plenty of dead money has worked and he takes the main pot. It’s the side pot that contains all the chips though and Matthews’ aces win that.
John Welsh says he passed AK with the A
