The pain barrier

Have you ever sat there with the 'nuts' and wondered just how much to bet to ensure a call? Or have you considered bluffing someone but not known how much to bet to make him or her pass? An important, but often disregarded, thing to know in a poker game is how are your opponents doing in the game. Are they winning or losing? Have they just arrived or are they about to leave shortly? Do they have any more money in their pockets or is all their available money on the table?

Let's say that your opponent in a particular pot started with £500 on the table and currently has £730 in front of him/her. On the end you river the nut hand and want them to call your bet. Betting £150 or even £200 is much more likely to induce a call; £250 or £275 is much more likely to make them pass, as a losing call will take them through the pain barrier. The reverse is also true if you want your opponent to pass when bluffing. If you bet just enough so that if he calls he goes from winning to losing overall he is more likely to pass. Players go through these psychological situations without even realising and these situations happen again and again. The pain barrier won't work 100% of the time but used in the correct situations it will definitely increase the size of your wins!
