Im sitting down with some friends in a couple of days for a 50 no limit texas game, winner takes all. There are ten of us. The problem being, how do you beat people who have never played any sort of game, except with friends, without a care!. They are the sort of guys who call you with bottom pair when the flop comes A K 2!. How can i can i capatalise!!

Conserve chips if it's a freezeout comp.Play only premium hands in good position, and don't try any funny moves because they won't understand it.Let them chop each other up calling each other to death until you're in the last 3.

Then raise everything.B)

Enjoy.

Alternatively, urge them all to read Sklansky's book for beginners, then watch them fold to all your small raises and occasionally light up when they flop top-pair.

They'll be fish with no teeth.

I recently played in a ladies tournament where 8 of the ten players on the table had no idea at all. At first I tried this conservative aggressive play and still was beaten. (You can't scare off beginners!) Then I figured if I can't beat them....join them....no look all the way and hope for the best.

I didn't win but I had a lot of fun and plenty of laughs.

Cheers,
Carlene:)

If you watch the "Celebrity Poker Club" series which starts going out on Challenge TV in October, you will see this very problem come up several times! As a celebrity tournament (rather than a professional one) there was a very wide range of ability, with some of the players (footballers especially, as I remember) never having played the game EVEN ONCE before. Some of them were still asking the rules after an hour of play.
I know that I can speak for both myself and Al Alvarez in saying that these people were especially difficult to play against. It should make for a very entertaining show - and perhaps a good practical way to work out what IS the best method under these circumstances. I'm sure the commentators Barny and Jesse will have some opinions...

Now I come to think of it, this being a celebrity tournament and all, maybe for the next series they could invite the ACTUAL Muppets. What a great poker show that would be. I'm sure I've already played against Oscar The Grouch several times at the Vic...
But which Muppet would triumph, I wonder?

The game would never finish because someone would ask "how much in the pot" and that would start The Count off :

One ! Ah Ah Ah !

(long pause)

Two ! Ah Ah Ah !

(long pause)

etc.

Well that's if we're allowed characters from Sesame Street anyway ...

Indulge me here, it's Friday.

Andy.

Don't put your money in before the flop, outplay them when you can see your cards.

Also don't play the odd's

say you are getting 60:40 on the hand, fold it, because you will be able to out play them later on, when you have better odds such as 90:10

thats how i play them anyway

Your long term EV drops with this approach.

: Your long term EV drops with this approach.

It was a tournament structure that was under discussion, though, so - in a very real sense -there is no long term.

I reckon Gonzo would win, as long as you can stop Statler and Waldorf colluding.

Oh, I just fancied rubbishing a comment, I didn't know we were referring to a single tournament.

Big Bird has that hustler look about him. Talks a lot and looks dumb, but he's just waiting to trap you.

Having given this considerable thought I think the aggression of Animal would win the day.
