its been two yrs since i posted about getting my iphone4 and now contract is due in 3rd oct, my company has not contacted me about this. Not even a letter with offers etc

i rang them myself to ask what type of upgrade i would be entitled to i got told if i wanted iphone5 it would be like 130euro and 40euro a month, Thing is i think this is bog standard deal for even a random person off the street so why is it called a upgrade?

also if i dont take out a new contract what usually happens with the contract u are already assigned to? does it just keep running until u give one month notice? i.e same price plan/monthly billl and same minutes data usage etc?

never renewed a contract with a phone company before/upgrade so have no idea really.

iphone5s is due soon i wonder what the price of the phone will be like on a bill pay?

also i cut off my broadband with them from the 3oct too. As they put my bill up by 50% several months ago without informing me..(thread on here somewhere) so will be tethering my line for my PC / personal hotspot/wi-fi do android phone have that capability?

will have more questions as well but that will do for now Very Happy

cheers

pretty much every phone since the mid 90s has been able to be hooked up to a computer to use as a modem

did it once using my android phone years back and I recall it being pretty easy to do

"upgrades" just means you sign onto the contract again and get a new handset, the handset can be a worse one than the one you have depending on what you negotiate

it became known as an upgrade as typically people get a newer/better phone than the handset they are currently using, so it's an upgrade on that, not necessarily the deal you are getting

generally you get better deals signing up as a new customer elsewhere, unless your current providers retentions team deem you worth keeping, though don't hold your breath

a lot of customers just keep paying their monthly line rental after their contract is up, so it makes the carrier more money if they don't inform you that you can resign and get a new deal

you can also decide to keep your current handset and negotiate a better deal on your line rental, though be aware your phone will be out of warranty and they won't give you a discount on a new handset during the extended time you agree to resign on for

so unless there is a particular reason for you wanting a new phone you may be better off just getting a monthly sim only contract which is what I do

7 a month for 250mins 5000txt and 500MB data and then I just change the phone whenever I want (paying the entire cost of it) but I'm still using the same phone I got 3 years ago and the phone I had before that I had for about 7 years and now is sitting in a drawer as a back up

I agree with grumble. If your iPhone 4 works as it should and you would not use a newer phone to its potential I would go SIM only route. For me it is important for unlimited data and unlimited calls so I use 3 for the price. I have a Sony experia s that is a bloody great phone And no iTunes issues

cheers grumble

some benefits of the newer phones is 4G right? not sure if that will be available in ireland?

it will be my main source of internet access, phone use and desktop tethering in evenings 5pm til 11pm...emails facebook poker youtube so will keep the unimited data plan, 40 a month is only a 10euro a week which is good deal here i think

i am just not sure what to do. if i dont renew a contract or sign a new one i am out of contract, does that mean i can just stay as i am on my own phone and same data/call plan im on at the minute until i wont to stop? (probs 1month notice)?

was reading on 2+2 iphone thread that people who dont upgrade are mental and cost themselves lots of $$$ as u could upgrade to newer phone and just sell it?

the 2 phones i was looking at was either iphone5 or 5s depending on what cash they want as payment and the samsung galaxy range probs the newest one whatever that may be....

Neil my bro has a brand new sony xperia J - in box from his last urgrade in UK... he said it looks nice and that im a sheep following the big names Very Happy

anyways upgrading is confusing stuff i will read more before i do or sign anything.

p.s can u haggle a contract with these companies?anytime i phone em they basically say like it or lump it.....one guy even tried to talk me into cutting my line off that day lol cheeky tw4t

Yes, the contract you're on will just keep running until you decide to stop or change. Depending on how deep you are into the apple system, how many apps you have, etc, it may be worth getting another iPhone.

The cheapest will be to buy a phone outright and get a sim only plan, but that requires a huge outlay up front. It would be wise to get a 4g capable phone to make it future proof. Then you're pretty much stuck with Three as your provider if you want to run your whole internet experience via your phone.

well you can sometimes get a decent deal on a new phone and then selling it, though you have to go through the hassle of selling it and you may actually be able to get a better deal just going sim only

that does also run the risk of your phone breaking and then you are signed into a 2 year (or whatever) contract

there are so many options and variables it's a case of shopping around and getting what fits best for your needs and being fully aware what you are signing up for and the pros and cons of that

Never understood why someone would pay pounds a month for a phone it just seems crazy

I have a smart phone (bought and paid for )and it does everything an iphone does and all i pay is 15 month for unlimited min, unlimited texts and unlimited web use

Your paying through the nose for something that will change in 6 months or less to a so called better phone.

I found golf clubs the same thing they bring out the new Nike,Callaway etc driver at 350 but by xmas its down to 100 and some wonderful replacement pops on the scene

Santa is giving me an iphone 5S this year and paid for outright.
I don't plan on making many calls as I have a business mobile as well which has no internet or camera but can make calls. Any tips on best contracts to get, where to go etc? Confused

Go prepay?

Or if you really aren't using it a lot but still dont' want the hassle topping up sim only deals are the way to go (imo). Talk Mobile (owned by carphone warehouse) do 5 a month sim only deal for 100 mins 100 texts and 100 meg

You may want more data than that though, I'm on the 7 a month sim only deal which gets 250 mins 5k texts and 500 meg.

Or you can sign up to a longer sim only contract for better deals, though I like that I can just cancel it any month, or drop up and down between plans at ease.

be warned though, the carphone warehouse are a right pain to deal with, I certainly wouldn't recommend signing up if you aren't patient, took me about 6 weeks to initially sign up and port my phone number over and had even more hassle sorting it out for my parents as well

another popular option is giff gaff, though I think the cheapest they do is 10 a month (maybe 8?), they use o2 network rather than vodafone though so that's why I went with talk mobile as vodafone has the better signal round here

Only has 250 mb although to be honest i have no idea what this means in terms of whether this is fine for me or too little.

250 is probably fine, I only used 70meg last month though I'm on wifi a lot of the time and don't use my phone a lot anyway

when not on wifi I can use between 200 ~ 300

all depends what you are going to be using it for

not sure why you would go with that o2 deal over the ones I said, you tie yourself into it for a year instead of monthly deals, so if it isn't enough or it's too much you don't have much in the way of flexibility

http://giffgaff.com/goodybags also on the o2 network if that's a concern signal wise and you are only tied in 1 month at a time rather than a whole year, no faffing about with cashback either, also if you decide you don't like it then you can just change next month to another provider rather than being stuck on a year contract

and if you were going to go through carphone warehouse I'd go with their own talkmobile (like I mentioned) as they tend to have the best prices http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/tariffs/sim-only (90p cheaper a month, no year contract and double the data for 50 less mins (though 250 is probably more than plenty by the sounds of it, but only you know your use requirements)
