Would you have played this differently and how so?

Was it bad luck or bad play, would really like some advice on this but im feeling more of bad luck.

Mostly bad luck. I'm no cash game specialist by any means but I think those that are might tell you not to call the 3 bet preflop unless you know you can stack the guy if you hit.

If you have played with the guy for a length of time and he is a rock then making the call preflop is questionable as it's unlikely you will be able to extract that much value from him.
