In my opinion the crux of this whole 'debate' is down to linguistics, semantics and the definition of racism. Personally I define racism as negative discrimination towards people of differing races and the belief that any given race is superior or inferior is also enshrined in such an eschewed ideology.

I understand that there are differences that exist between various cultures, that much is obvious. I think one of the problems arises when culture and race (and more worryingly religion) are viewed as the same entity.

Quote:
"Logically (although maybe not morally) I should deal with the person of my own race, as they are more likely to be better business partners"

If a person lived their life guided purely by logic and discounted moral decisions then I would view them as a rather sad individual that had valued personal gain over the natural experience of connecting on an emotional level with humanity.

The fact that business dealings with people of your own race is the 'logical' decision is again rather upsetting but I imagine that things will become less of an issue as the global economy continues its relentless march.

I find black girls the sexiest, but I'd be more inclined to marry an Asian.

Chinese-ish. I don't know many Indian girls because even though in theory there should be lots nearby they aren't allowed outdoors or something.

Your question hinges on the premise that peoples surnames are a direct indicator towards their cultural origin.

No it doesnt. As with the Rev's point, it just hinges on there being some non-zero correlation (not even causation) between the surname and behaviour (hypothesised via likely culture).

It'd be similar to making assumptions about a class-culture-behaviour link to a person with a triple-barreled name descended from aristocracy. It doesn't give us any direct evidence that their parents are more closely related than average, but it increases the odds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayes'_theorem)

Its like how holding the ace of diamonds is no direct indicator that the opponent doesn't have the diamond flush draw, but it makes it somewhat less likely and it would be irrational to ignore it.
