| For those who are interested in racism in football there was quite a good programme on BBC 3 called "Racism in football" which is available on the iplayer. Mods please don't shut down all these discussions they are legitimate topics which are being discussed all over the internet forums and in the media. |

Good point, but he comes across as a very clever guy when speaking about race issues.
Was listening to 606 a while back and Jason Roberts was harking on about how there are no black managers/Coaches and when pressed on his mates he was talking about he admitted none of them had taken their badges
I hope Chris Hughton kicks on he's done a great job wherever he's been. I hope Norwich support him with adequete funds. _________________ Nobody likes Grasses |

I tend to agree with Barnes despite his failure at Celtic. He said a white guy would be given more of a chance and that was certainly true of Mowbray at Celtic. His record was far worse than Barnes' and yet he was given more games to prove himself. Barnes' other complaint was that he was not getting the offers that a white guy would have got. He's probably right about that as well. Barnes was a top player with 79 England caps. At that time he should have been a target for second and third tier clubs looking for a big name manager. I'm pretty certain that an equivalent white guy would have got some offers. |

Didnt he have a stinker at Tranmere as well?
If you have 2 quick failures in your early management career your pretty much on the scrapheap. _________________ Nobody likes Grasses |

Norwich, adequate funds ?!?! Newcastle didn't treat him very well and it's great that he's bounced back a little. |

It took him nine years to get his second job in English football so I wouldn't describe it as "quick". He was very successful as the manager of the Jamaican national side in between and Tranmere only gave him until the October of his first season as the manager, so again his complaint that he wasn't given very long seems to be borne out. |

In all fairness, not many managers white or black get a first job at a club the size of Celtic, especially when they have no playing history with them. Mowbray had served a managerial apprenticeship with Hibs and West Brom, and was a former Celtic player, and he was still gone in his first season so I don't think that's a great comparison to be honest.
Also, without going in and studying all Celtics results under Mowbray, wasn't Barnes's position untenable when they got turned over at home to Inverness Caley Thistle in the cup., did Mowbray have a performance/result as bad as that.
I thought the program on the whole was good, but I thought talking to John Barnes about lack of managerial opportunity's was a slight cop out as he's held 2 positions, both of which he performed poor.
Chris Hughton, is a very impressive up and coming manager, who was sacked harshly at Newcastle, but has performed well at Birmingham, and is now back in the Prem within 18 months due to his good performance. Maybe Hughton should have had a mention to show an example of a young black manager who is, and quite rightly being given an opportunity to prove himself. |

Ruud Gullitt ended a 27 year drought at Chelsea
Eddie Newton's excellent job as right hand man also secured us the CL |

i just think the black manager thing is a red herring
teams will pay the same at least for a world class black player
and if a black manager could bring success they would have him, im sure this same argument popped up over paul ince in the past |
