Actually part of another thread, but anyway....

I am due to play in my first b&m tournament this evening.

How do re-buys generally work in B&M tournaments? I know that there is generally a time limit, but:

1. Is the limit likely to be 2 hours, or half an hour or what?
2. Re-buys indicate a bust, then buying chips, but I have read about 'top-ups'. So will some of the people at the table have more chips than me at the start?
3. Do you normally re-buy at the table?
4. If you need to leave the table, do you make up the blind on your return or how does that work?
5. Does a straight beat a flush or is it the other way round?
6. Just kidding.

You will note an implied pessimism throughout this thread!

Cheers

60,75,90 minutes more common - just ask at the start.
2. Re-buys indicate a bust, then buying chips,
but I have read about 'top-ups'. So will some of the people at the table have more chips than me at the start?

only seen that in the states where you get one re-buy that you can use at any time- including before the start. In UK, after the re-buy period everyone has the opportunity to take a top up (usually the same chips as the start) regardless of your current chip holding.
3. Do you normally re-buy at the table?

Only if you want to carry on playing! b) Yes, just shout "chips" and wave your money...
4. If you need to leave the table, do you make up the blind on your return or how does that work?

Some kind soul will post your blinds for you from your stack and fold your hand automatically until you return. There is no sitting out as you could with a cash game, so get yourself "sorted" before the start or at the short interval whilst all the top-ups are being conducted.
5. Does a straight beat a flush or is it the other way round?

usually by the time you reach the river - YES.
6. Just kidding.

I wasn't.

Thanks for that.

To clarify the point about the top-ups. What's to stop someone buying 10 top ups and becoming chip leader? Maybe nothing?

It probably doesn't make much difference actually, I plan to take enough for 1 re-buy and a couple of drink. If that lasts me the first hour, I'll be a happy bunny.

Cheers

When you rebuy in the UK you'll always rebuy for the same amount as you started with, in chips that is. Top ups will usually be for the same although DOUBLE chips for a top up is not uncommon.

It encourages players to top up and adds to the prize pool!

Here in Ireland your stack actually INCREASES everytime you rebuy.

So you start off with 1000 then you rebuy for 1200 then you rebuy for 1500 then 2000 then 2500 etc etc.

I've been known to rebuy, just before the break for 7000 and THEN GET A TOP UP for another 3000 as well!!

Mind you it did cost me an arm and a leg!!

Hi strange,

you can only top up once at the end of rebuys, hence you are unable to become chip leader by just buying loads more chips. Everyone is able to buy one top up regardless of how many chips they have. This is unlike the rebuys where you can only rebuy if you have no chips or very few.

Hope this hasn't confused things, I am sure that people will explain the specific rules to you at the tourny if you ask (they can be slightly different at different places).

good luck,

Steveyboy

Very basically it’s like this (or very close) Assuming it’s a 10 comp. You will get 500 chips at 10 when you start. Any time you lose those chips, you can buy another 500 at 10. At the end of the buy-in period (usually 45-60 mins) you can buy 500 more chips at 10 (a top up). Regardless of how many chips you have. And usually only one top-up is allowed. There are variations, but most are like this. If it is any different, ask someone when you are there and they will let you know.

In the rebuy games I play, you're allowed unlimited rebuys but only one top-up. Also you don't have to wait until you're all-out, you can rebuy when you go below a certain amount (either starting stack or half of starting stack).

Keep in mind that its not how many chips you have that matters, it's how much profit you make i.e. winnings minus buy-ins, re-buys & top-ups. Most players tend to be very loose-aggressive during the rebuy period, with lots of all-ins pre-flop. This is because they can try to build a big stack and can rebuy if they get knocked out. I find it good strategy to play tighter during this period, unless the blind-stack ratio prevents this.

Most players consider it always correct to rebuy, as you've already invested and things will calm down after the rebuy period. Following this logic, the more times you've re-bought the more correct it is to do so again (provided you're happy with you're own standard of play). This does however create a conundrum, where-by after multiple rebuys you have to make a middle money place to break even. The only time I consider it unwise to rebuy is if you get knocked out near the end of the rebuy period, meaning if you rebuy you're already short-stacked.

Most players on average rebuy twice. At the end of the period ask the floorman the size of the total prize pool. This divided by the no. of players is the mean chip count. Ideally you want to be on or above that level of chips at all stages.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself. If the structure throws you at first, you'll get used to it.

Many, many thanks to everyone. I think I have a very good idea of what to expect now.

On the off chance that anyone is interested, I'll post back tomorrow to say how I got on.

: In the rebuy games I play, you're allowed unlimited rebuys but only one
: top-up. Also you don't have to wait until you're all-out, you can rebuy when
: you go below a certain amount (either starting stack or half of starting
: stack).
:
: Keep in mind that its not how many chips you have that matters, it's how much
: profit you make i.e. winnings minus buy-ins, re-buys & top-ups. Most players
: tend to be very loose-aggressive during the rebuy period, with lots of all-ins
: pre-flop. This is because they can try to build a big stack and can rebuy if
: they get knocked out. I find it good strategy to play tighter during this
: period, unless the blind-stack ratio prevents this.
:
: Most players consider it always correct to rebuy, as you've already invested
: and things will calm down after the rebuy period. Following this logic, the
: more times you've re-bought the more correct it is to do so again (provided
: you're happy with you're own standard of play). This does however create a
: conundrum, where-by after multiple rebuys you have to make a middle money place
: to break even. The only time I consider it unwise to rebuy is if you get
: knocked out near the end of the rebuy period, meaning if you rebuy you're
: already short-stacked.
:
: Most players on average rebuy twice. At the end of the period ask the
: floorman the size of the total prize pool. This divided by the no. of players
: is the mean chip count. Ideally you want to be on or above that level of chips
: at all stages.
:
: Most importantly, enjoy yourself. If the structure throws you at first,
: you'll get used to it.
:
:
: --Previous Message--
:
: : Thanks for that.
: :
: : To clarify the point about the top-ups. What's to stop someone buying 10
: top
: : ups and becoming chip leader? Maybe nothing?
: :
: : It probably doesn't make much difference actually, I plan to take enough for
: 1
: : re-buy and a couple of drink. If that lasts me the first hour, I'll be a
: happy
: : bunny.
: :
: : Cheers
