I was checking the betfair odds on the one drop this morning and I see that Ivey is still being offered at 1000:1 even though he's been out of the tournament for more than 12 hrs. Are these markets not moderated?

The max odds you will see in any event on there is generally 1000/1 which basically means that the selection can no longer win. If a horse falls he will still be on offer at 1000/1 because like life there is always one sucker out there who will take a bet. Depends what you mean by moderated. Betfair wont remove a selection until the event is over because the event may change the rules as in Ivey maybe able to rebuy or something silly like that

So are you saying that in a drunken state, if i chuck £100 on him and he's out I lose it?

As far as I know any "bookie" ( i put that in brackets as Betfair use to say they werent) the bet wouldnt be there, or if it is the money is safe.

This is no fault of Betfair.

Caveat Emptor - bet on what you like at what odds you like IMO, I can't really believe gamblers want a company to be their nanny, when they are backing because of an opinion that their knowledge is superior.

Really ?!?! I don't agree here, do Bet365 allow you to back and lay now then ??? This is the same Bet365 that would only take a bet from me of a whopping £21.40 on a 7/2 shot in a boxing match the other week, now that's a proper bookie !! Not the first time its happened with them either (and no im not a big winner on my Bet365 a/c) At least with Betfair I can see the liquidity in the market.
As for the 1000/1 shot on Betfair, it's a betting exchange. If I offer 1000/1 for something to occur and you're happy to place a bet at those odds then where's the problem ?
And if someone is drunk while doing so then more fool them.
Not too much difference between that and playing online poker with someone who we are unaware is drunk and wanting them to stack off to us on the flop with top pair IMO.
Doesn't mean the poker site should step in and say hold on mate you had no chance of winning there, what you doing ? Have your money back.
There would be a perfectly good reason Phil Ivey was 1000/1 to win a poker tournament.
You can only fool a fool !

Betfair is just a middleman. Where do you draw the line for how much protection you want? Bearing in mind the the entire game is about exploiting other people's mistakes.

Once it's physically impossible for someone to win? The casual numpty is likely to take their business elsewhere if they find out a site has allowed them to make a bet they can't win.

I think the odds of 1000/1 for Phil Ivey to win a poker tournament suggest it's highly likely he's already eliminated and bar a extraordinary sequence of events like all the players remaining get disqualified for collusion/cheating or something he ain't going to win.
However to put these odds into perspective, you can get the same odds (1000/1) at a well known High street Bookmaker for a man to land on Pluto by midnight next Sunday !!!! Now if that is not a bet that cannot win then I don't know what is !

When a act gets eliminated from the xfactor they go to 1000 on betfair, but last year an act got back in and was trading at about 5 iirc.

So impossible isn't always well.............. impossible, but often 1000 are just poor odds in most of these cases.

It's a bookie now as well.

I assumed the OP was talking about the betfair odds not some random persons odds.
