"The cost of posting letters is to increase to record levels after the Royal Mail announced a 14p increase in the cost of first and second-class stamps to 60p and 50p."
Is it just me or is this taking the mick and will just encourage many like me to reduce using mail?

60p to get a letter from London to Aberdeen in one day seems OK to me. _________________ @oneshotbobby on twitter |

People should use less mail.
Junk mail is proof the post is too cheap, generally nobody that I want to contact me uses mail, they use email. The companies that claim they need to use mail SHOULD switch to email. AFAIK Amazon already uses 3rd parties.
Therefore this make no difference, I hope it reduces waste of tax money. _________________ http://www.alexbowler.com |

While I agree with you on the junk mail thing what about say pensioners that still like to write letters, etc? The Tories are hitting them hard enough these days.
Email has its drawback for businesses as well given that something like 97% of all email sent is spam and probably a very high % of that is never opened.
Also, you might not want to send or receive birthday/xmas cards but plenty others do.
One thing I will concede though is that this has probably been brought on by people not using mail enough! So if people follow Alex's above advice it'll get worse and soon enough it'll be over £1 for a stamp! |

| Logic is going that way, cost goes up encouraging me not to send mail, as income goes down they need to raise the cost, so we use even less and the cost goes up again.... |

is that perception or reality? Andrew Neill convinced me it was the former. _________________

Junk mailers don't use stamps - business mail is a lot cheaper, the stamp rise should effect hardly any companies. _________________ Jon "the British cowboy" Woodfield

Why should subsidised post exist today?
It sounds bad for the environment.
How is it good for taxpayers for people to send more mail than they would consume otherwise?
I don't want tax £s spent shipping Valentines cards and Christmas cards, personally.
It should cost the true value, and possibly be taxed extra, if someone wants to invoke helicopters, trains and vans in a situation where the alternative online costs essentially zero. _________________ http://www.alexbowler.com |

| Does anyone post letters? Ever? I sold my cds in little boxes and they were a smidge too heavy for regular stamps. So it's just letters. I might send someone a handwritten letter just to freak them out. That would be mental! |

I would have thought that the people who do use it also pay or paid their taxes and some wouldn't even know what the internetz is.
Damn kids today, never had it so good. |

possibly the most stupid thing you have said. though to be fair recently you have been keen to give it a lot of competition. _________________ The next best thing to gambling and winning is gambling and losing.
