League One leaders Brighton suffered a 3-1 humbling at Hartlepool United as their lead at the top was cut to six points.
It was only Albion's second league loss of the season, but the home side were full value for their victory.
Pools took the lead on 23 minutes, Neil Austin starting and finishing the move. His firm tackle on the halfway line won possession and he kept charging forward after feeding James Brown. When Brown's deep cross was nodded across goal by Antony Sweeney, the right-back had an empty net to nod into.
Brighton started the second half well and levelled when lively substitute Kazenga LuaLua crossed for Gary Dicker to fire home.
But Gary Liddle restored the lead in the 71st minute with a low shot after Sam Collins' long throw was not cleared.
Five minutes later, Liddle was on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Liam Bridcutt and the visiting midfielder was sent off by referee Russell Booth. The points were sealed after 84 minutes when Leon McSweeney's cross was headed in by James Poole. |

A dramatic stoppage-time own-goal by defender Marcos Painter gave Bristol Rovers a deserved 2-2 draw against Brighton.
Rovers struck in the second minute of added time when Painter put a corner from skipper Stuart Campbell into his own net.
The Seagulls went behind midway through the first half when they failed to defend a corner from Campbell and a header by Byron Anthony was deflected in off Ashley Barnes.
Brighton levelled when Jeff Hughes put through his own goal after Painter drove a cross into the six-yard box.
Striker Chris Wood, signed on loan from West Brom and making his debut, put Brighton ahead 17 minutes from time from the penalty spot after Anthony brought down substitute Glenn Murray. |

Kelvin Davis was the hero for Southampton as his penalty save from Chris Wood held Brighton to a 0-0 draw at St Mary's.
In a disjointed first half, neither side could produce a clear opening as Jose Fonte and Rickie Lambert went closest for Saints.
The game finally came alive on the stroke of half-time when Adam Lallana was denied a penalty after being hauled down as he stormed in Brighton's box, while Gary Dicker saw a deflected shot go close at the other end.
The second half was similarly hard fought but Brighton spurned a golden chance to snatch all three points on 66 minutes.
Ryan Dickson was adjudged to have fouled Glenn Murray in the Saints area, but West Brom loanee Wood - who scored from the spot last week against Bristol Rovers - saw his well-struck penalty saved by Davis.
Despite a flurry of late end-to-end action, chances remained scarce as the match ended all-square, keeping the Seagulls on top of League One and Saints lurking in the play-off picture. |

Another busy week at Football League HQ began with the announcement of Kazenga LuaLua as October’s Football League Young Player of the Month in The Times’ football supplement ‘The Game’.
The 19-year-old winger was rewarded for his performances last month which included two stunning goals for Brighton & Hove Albion during his second loan spell at the south coast club.
PS Please stuff FC United in the cup |

Seems you have to break us to beat us. Penalty given away in the 3rd minute, one of our players goes off injured in the 5th, one of yours gets sent off in the 6th? Nice work Gus.
Anyisah is probably our biggest threat so if that's what you need to do then so be it. |
