I played in the redtooth poker league at my local pub for the first time last night. The person that was organising the event had some very strange rules on how to play poker. I started questioning one or two of them but was told the rules are different for pub/redtooth poker so i was like ok i guess they aren't going to play the proper rules just because some random person (me) says they're wrong. One of the rules was preflop only the SB could raise... wtf? The other odd thing was the amount people were allowed to raise by was totally wrong and if say someone on the flop bet 800 which was the big blind and a short stack went all in for 500 they would take 300 back from the original bettor even though there were still players left to act. How crazy i thought. When it went to the final table though the players were suddenly raising normally preflop so i was left wondering if it was just the organiser that didn't know the rules of poker. Has anyone else played in this poker league? Slightly confusing.

I've seen some strange rules and terms used in pub games as well. Among them that any game for money was called a cash game even if it was a tournament, a shootout structure with top 3 going forward from each table described as an MTT and under-raises permitted but a cap on the upper limit. Some are just nitpicky but it explains why some new players at casino games have utterly no clue if they've come from their local pub game.

I had to laugh at how bad everyone was last night. One hand i hit a straight draw on the flop and bet and got called then on the turn i hit a flush draw as well as my SD and i bet again. I didn't want to go all in because i assumed the person in the hand would call with just about anything so i thought i'll just give up on the river if i miss. I did miss so checked and the other player checked. I said you've won i only have a jack with no pair. To my total surprise she had 4,6 off suit. So she had called me with absolutely nothing on a board with alot of high cards and i had shown alot of strength and i'd been playing very tight. I actually felt embarrased for her Laughing . That was probably the worst thing i'd seen all night but most of the players were doing things like that. Quite funny really. If only i could play people like that for money every day.

maybe she was calling for the low draw? Very Happy

the best pub game I ever played i was on the same table as the landlord and his missus - I bluffed one or other of them 9 hands in a row - they have the juiciest ever cash game running as well, only 25p/50p but they have deep pockets and simply do not understand pot odds although last time I played one of them had a copy of wpt mag so they may start getting clued up

make sure you donk out of tournament then suggest cash game Wink

I think the lowest card on the board was a nine so not sure what draw she was going for Laughing .

I wasn't sure if they needed a license for cash games?

Yeah i don't think pot odds was something most of them thought about. When we were down to the last 3 players i was short stacked and had to put in half my stack on the big blind so called the SB in the dark when he raised. The person next to me was like 'why did you do that' when i turned over 7,4. Some of them would have folded if they had less than the SB left in their stack if they didn't have good cards Laughing .

You have to put up with it to some extent if you want to play in these things. Though that does sound coimically bad.

The rules you stated are not Redtooth rules in any way. Anyone can raise, betting more than the all-in is a bet/raise and must stand and no cap on raises, its why its called No-Limit. It sounds like they are skewing the game in favor of themselves and against new or inexperienced players. 99% of Redtooth games are run to the official rules but the 1% give the pub poker leagues a bad name.

A player at our game, that came from another pub, where they said any player that bets out of turn cannot bet or raise for the entire hand - but only call, which is completely wrong and unfair. they should have the rules available in print for anyone to read and consult in disputes.

I suggest finding a different Redtooth venue as they will not like being told they're wrong and probably make you feel unwelcome.
