If in this case OP by paying for the damage had to spend the money that would otherwise feed his children hence leaving them hungry, it could I suppose be called a moral dilemma. One in this position has been traditionally described as "being on the horns of a dilemma", neither horn being comfortable. This is sometimes more colorfully described as "Finding oneself impaled upon the horns of a dilemma", referring to the sharp points of a bull's horns, equally uncomfortable (and dangerous).
i presume the other side is the guilt but knowing jon i guess this might not be a problem.
there are a thousand other moral issues with walking away.
moral dilemmas are not just for the ridiculous 'your wife and the worlds best brain surgeon are down a well you can only save one' blah blah blah nonsense. they can have application too.

Yes indeed, that is what a dilemma is; a moral dilemma though is a philosophical construct. It is a particular type of dilemma whereby none of the choices are acceptable because there is no choice on offer that does not breach your moral principles. I repeat, it is precisely NOT a choice between acting morally and acting immorally.

There's a whole raft of hypothetical ones.
Imagine a bus is out of control on the street, aiming for a group of 30 kids. A big fat man is in the way quite close to you. He's so fat he'd probably stop the bus and save the kids. He hasn't seen the bus.
So do you shout for him to get out of the way, or do you not warn him and save the kids?

I've done this sort of thing a few times, notably the other day in Saffron Walden when I knocked into a nobhead in a Range Rover

I've spent three months in a Buddhist commune, so kinda. They weren't markedly less moral than me but I know I can carry it under pressure, so I'd still take me. I know people who get attached to physical things and I know they benefit from being brought into the wider world. The Porsche still works. Chill. |

Tell that to the cyclist who gets killed when the Porshe driver dosn't see her in his mirror.
It's OK to be chilled about your own worldly possessions, but if you take it upon yourself to be that way about other people's you come off like a sanctimonious hippy. Which I'm sure you're not.

Q1. What is the probability of this happening? The driver should not be driving the car anyway.

Window on my car got smashed this week, luckilly guy had left note to say this probably happened when he was strimming the grass in the car park. Would have been peeved if they hadnt left note.
Think the moral of the story is do unto others as you would have done unto yourself. |
