Rhys Ifans is brilliant as the real author of Shakespeare's works set against a backdrop of Elizabethan political scheming and shenanigans, didn't think this would be my cup of tea (or even goblet of mead Very Happy ) but ended up really enjoying it, would recommend.

Super 8
Kids on an adventure Goonies style but with a scarey monster. A quite enjoyable 7.5/10.

Did that kid on the bus puke for real?

Street Thief

It's a documentary about a professional thief. It is extremely gripping and you'll without doubt watch it until the end. The way it's filmed is incredible and the thief is an intriguing character.

I had some questions before watching it: Why would a thief let a crew film his face? Why would he let them film his actual work? His methods etc etc. I could only think that he was planning on retiring and moving elsewhere, or that his face would be covered (it isn't). I also thought maybe the work is filmed years ago and he agreed for it to be released at a later date. This wasn't the case so I still have many unanswered questions. It's possible it could all be staged but it's impossible to say. There is no evidence to my knowledge that it was staged although questions are still flying around.

Aside from all of that, it's worth watching and have your own theory after it. There's an interesting end to it and again it'll leave you with even more questions unanswered. If anything it'll get you thinking/talking about this film.

8.5/10

------------

Columbiana - A solid film and worth watching. Pretty similar to a couple of other films around the now but still very good. 8/10

Thats right. Sean Penn is immense in it.
If I could only watch one of them, Mystic River would get my vote.

I watched this last night, was a bit confused about what it was trying to be tbh and what the message was they were trying to get across, some of the deep philosophical stuff went over my head and there are a couple of scenes that are just plain unbelievable and laughable, shame really as Neeson puts in a bloody good performance.

I came across one of the most violent disturbing films I think I have ever seen on BBC4 last night called City of Life and Death in 1937 Japan laid siege to Chinese capital of Nanking, this is a dramatization of the battle.

Obviously made more poignant by the fact it is based on real events. I have read a lot about 'the rape of Nanking' as it is commonly referred to, the Japanese/Chinese history books report events differently to this day.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1124052/

I'm not going to score the film as it seems inappropriate to do so, quite simply an incredibly difficult watch but a superbly made film. Probably the most realistic war film I think I have seen

One of the last scenes, has a victory dance by Japanese soldiers which apparently is also to do with honouring their dead. It's quite hypnotic and balletic in style and in total contrast to the violence that has preceded it. It's also somewhat sinister and unnerving in its performance.

If you intend to see the film I'd suggest not watching this clip, not because its a spoiler but because it may lose its affect.
