Ok, so I played in my 1st live 10 tourney last night.

1st shock: it turned out to be a 20 game. 'Yeah, its been like like for a month or so, you were told wrong'. So my three lives has now become 1.

2nd shock: Marina, from Late Night Poker, wasn't there in her nice uniform to deal my cards for me. You are not going to believe this folks, but we had to deal our own cards!!! OK, so you knew this already, but for me, on a diet of LNP and online games, it came as a surprise.

3rd shock: I'm not very good. And I don't mean just playing PLHE. I mean that as well, of course, but also not very good at shuffling, dealing, stacking my chips neatly, interacting with 7 strangers at a cramped table when they all smoke and I don't and are simultaneously demonstrating the fact, and virtually evry other aspect of the evening.

I busted out, bought a life and busted out again not long after. Along the way I won a few small pots which was nice, particularly one where I read a player as being on nothing, but assuming that I, as a new player would fold to any bet. I called with Ace high and beat his king high. I enjoyed that.

Two other incidents worth telling: I get through to the river with one other player. 800 in the pot. 7 out of 8 players recognise that the nut Ace high straight is on the board. One doesn't. Guess which I was. I kind of had a suspicion, but with 7 people staring at me, I decide to give myself a little time to think about it. Check. '800' says the other guy. Eh.......It finally dawns and I call. 7 people laugh as we split the pot. ha ha......ha.

The other incident was right at the end. I had been at a table for about 30 mins, listening to the banter and laughing along with the jokes. I bust out and get up to leave. 'thanks guys, see you again'. No response. A little louder: 'thanks guys, see you again'. No response other than a glance out of the corner of the eye of the chap to my immediate right. They had heard me, but it was time for me to go away now please. Ah well.

Oh yes, and the staff that were running the tournament would have made your average fast food salesman look happy-go-lucky by comparison. Miserable, unhelpful, rude and sullen. Clearly they would have been just as happy if we had all just pi**ed off. Why do people put up with that crap?

Ah well. Back to the internet for me.

Grosvenor Southampton.

Its worth pointing out that during the game the other players were extremely tollerant of my inexperience, and were happy to correct me politely when I made mistakes. No problem there at all.

If you had asked me last night I would have said that I wouldn't go back. This morning my feeling was more along the lines of 'well I know what to expect now, so maybe after I learn a bit more about it'

I still think that the casino card room staff were rubbish though. Apart from the lady that brought coffee, she was great.

The other thing was that I was surprised how much of the final few tables stacks were made up of top-ups. The concept of a 20 tournament is pretty much irrelevant. Most if not all of the people in the final stages had paid more like 100. I suppose I'd prefer a freeze out type tourney where the final fund is smaller, but everyone is on an even footing.

Lots of 'the other things' here Smile

As an aside, whay do they change cards after 20 or so hands?

I should be there tomorrow if you fancy risking it again and want some more practical advice. I may not be the best player in the world, but I can negotiate my way round Southampton i.e. the players, structure, habits etc, very easily.. There is a major problem with card room staff there at the money. Leon has quit, as has Deano. Only Ray and Ross now have any idea of what they’re doing and neither are really IMHO up to Leon’s standard.

The changing of cards is nothing. Some people who are getting nothing decent will simply shout for a new deck because they think it will bring them more luck!

Freezeout tourneys would suit most people on a limited budget. But especially at places like Southampton, it can still be to your advantage. Most of the blokes who have had 5-6 lives do not tighten up a huge amount when the re-buy period has ended. This means that their large stack of chips are usually available if you are patient and find a few cards at the right time.

They changed the 10 on a Tuesday to 20 about a month ago. The reason being that Southsea is closing and (believe it or not) the were getting too many players turn up!! So 20 is to reduce the number of runners (insane IMO) The 10 game on a Tuesday was becoming full of players like yourself who were just starting out playing live poker. The management have now ensured that they are priced out of the game in order to make it “easier” to run the card room.

Like I said, if you fancy another crack and want to point out the miserable old B*stard’s that were on your table, I should be down there tomorrow.

Be lucky

Hi

About 7 or 8 months ago I played in my first live tourney. Upto that point i had played for about 4 or 5 months on the net. I can't comment about Southampton as I've never played there, but now play regularly at the Grosvenor Luton and can tell you that you just can't beat a Live tourney. At the beginning I still preferred internet tournies but i would say that changed after about a month or so.

What I can tell you is that when I first started playing, the staff were very welcoming, the players were very friendly and easy to talk to and they too put up with my poor shuffling and incorrect etiquette (some still have to put up with it!)

If you're ever up this way, the Grosvenor Luton hosts a beginners night on Tuesdays which I'm sure you'd enjoy. 10 buy in, Max 3 rebuys plus one add on. You get about 50-60% newbies and 40% of the more regular variety. You get 60-80 players, there's a fun atmosphere and because there are so many other newbies you'll feel much more relaxed. My wife has just started playing and she just loves it.

If you plan to come up this way, give me a shout, my email's at the top.

I second what Prince Charles says about the Luton Tuesday night Rockies tournys, when I've been people have always been very friendly and tolerant. If your ever in the area its definately worth a look in.

Prince Charles how did you go on the final table last night? (I was the guy sitting on your left at table 4).

: : : : : 2nd shock: Marina, from Late Night Poker, wasn't there in her nice
: : : uniform
: : : : to
: : : : : deal my cards for me. You are not going to believe this folks, but we
: : had
: : : : to
: : : : : deal our own cards!!! OK, so you knew this already, but for me, on a
: : diet
: : : of
: : : : LNP
: : : : : and online games, it came as a surprise.
: : : : :
: : : : : 3rd shock: I'm not very good. And I don't mean just playing PLHE. I
: : mean
: : : : that
: : : : : as well, of course, but also not very good at shuffling, dealing,
: : : stacking
: : : : my
: : : : : chips neatly, interacting with 7 strangers at a cramped table when
: they
: : : all
: : : : : smoke and I don't and are simultaneously demonstrating the fact, and
: : : : virtually
: : : : : evry other aspect of the evening.
: : : : :
: : : : : I busted out, bought a life and busted out again not long after.
: Along
: : : the
: : : : way
: : : : : I won a few small pots which was nice, particularly one where I read
: a
: : : : player as
: : : : : being on nothing, but assuming that I, as a new player would fold to
: : any
: : : : bet. I
: : : : : called with Ace high and beat his king high. I enjoyed that.
: : : : :
: : : : : Two other incidents worth telling: I get through to the river with
: one
: : : : other
: : : : : player. 800 in the pot. 7 out of 8 players recognise that the nut Ace
: : : high
: : : : : straight is on the board. One doesn't. Guess which I was. I kind of
: had
: : a
: : : : : suspicion, but with 7 people staring at me, I decide to give myself a
: : : : little
: : : : : time to think about it. Check. '800' says the other guy. Eh.......It
: : : : finally
: : : : : dawns and I call. 7 people laugh as we split the pot. ha ha......ha.
: : : : :
: : : : : The other incident was right at the end. I had been at a table for
: : about
: : : 30
: : : : : mins, listening to the banter and laughing along with the jokes. I
: bust
: : : out
: : : : and
: : : : : get up to leave. 'thanks guys, see you again'. No response. A little
: : : : louder:
: : : : : 'thanks guys, see you again'. No response other than a glance out of
: : the
: : : : corner
: : : : : of the eye of the chap to my immediate right. They had heard me, but
: it
: : : was
: : : : time
: : : : : for me to go away now please. Ah well.
: : : : :
: : : : : Oh yes, and the staff that were running the tournament would have
: made
: : : your
: : : : : average fast food salesman look happy-go-lucky by comparison.
: : Miserable,
: : : : : unhelpful, rude and sullen. Clearly they would have been just as
: happy
: : if
: : : we
: : : : had
: : : : : all just pi**ed off. Why do people put up with that crap?
: : : : :
: : : : : Ah well. Back to the internet for me.

My advice would be to stick at it.

I played my first B & M Tourny just over 14 months ago. Luckily I got second spot in a 30 PLHE in Notts, so I wasn't put off! Smile

Once you get used to the differences between internet and B & M and freezeouts and small buy in rebuy events, I'm sure you will realise that most of the players will be a lot worse than your average PartyPoker punter.

Good luck..

sorry to hear you had such a crap time, yes the regulars are loose as hell untill the rebuy period ends yes some of the players are complete twats but the real question is.
Did you get that rush when you won your first pot
Did you feel like the dogs bolloks when you made the right call with your ace high and did it relly matter that you shuffle wasnt perfect or your chips were not neat and tidy.
If you fancy a real good night come down to southsea on the first sunday fo the month 10 rebuy kick off at 8 most of them are a good bunch and we all tell the ******* to go ***** them selves any way...lol

: I second what Prince Charles says about the Luton Tuesday night Rockies
: tournys, when I've been people have always been very friendly and tolerant. If
: your ever in the area its definately worth a look in.
:
: Prince Charles how did you go on the final table last night? (I was the guy

: : Hi
: :
: : About 7 or 8 months ago I played in my first live tourney. Upto that point
: i
: : had played for about 4 or 5 months on the net. I can't comment about
: : Southampton as I've never played there, but now play regularly at the
: Grosvenor
: : Luton and can tell you that you just can't beat a Live tourney. At the
: : beginning I still preferred internet tournies but i would say that changed
: after
: : about a month or so.
: :
: : What I can tell you is that when I first started playing, the staff were
: very
: : welcoming, the players were very friendly and easy to talk to and they too
: put
: : up with my poor shuffling and incorrect etiquette (some still have to put
: up
: : with it!)
: :
: : If you're ever up this way, the Grosvenor Luton hosts a beginners night on
: : Tuesdays which I'm sure you'd enjoy. 10 buy in, Max 3 rebuys plus one add
: on.
: : You get about 50-60% newbies and 40% of the more regular variety. You get
: 60-80
: : players, there's a fun atmosphere and because there are so many other
: newbies
: : you'll feel much more relaxed. My wife has just started playing and she
: just
: : loves it.
: :
: : If you plan to come up this way, give me a shout, my email's at the top.

: more
: : : practical advice. I may not be the best player in the world, but I can
: : negotiate
: : : my way round Southampton i.e. the players, structure, habits etc, very
: : easily..
: : : There is a major problem with card room staff there at the money. Leon
: has
: : quit,
: : : as has Deano. Only Ray and Ross now have any idea of what they?re doing
: : : and neither are really IMHO up to Leon?s standard.
: : :
: : : The changing of cards is nothing. Some people who are getting nothing
: : decent
: : : will simply shout for a new deck because they think it will bring them
: more
: : : luck!
: : :
: : : Freezeout tourneys would suit most people on a limited budget. But
: : especially
: : : at places like Southampton, it can still be to your advantage. Most of
: the
: : : blokes who have had 5-6 lives do not tighten up a huge amount when the
: : re-buy
: : : period has ended. This means that their large stack of chips are usually
: : : available if you are patient and find a few cards at the right time.
: : :
: : : They changed the 10 on a Tuesday to 20 about a month ago. The reason
: : being
: : : that Southsea is closing and (believe it or not) the were getting too
: many
: : : players turn up!! So 20 is to reduce the number of runners (insane IMO)
: The
: : 10
: : : game on a Tuesday was becoming full of players like yourself who were
: just
: : : starting out playing live poker. The management have now ensured that
: they
: : are
: : : priced out of the game in order to make it ?easier? to run the card
: : : room.
: : :
: : : Like I said, if you fancy another crack and want to point out the
: miserable
: : : old B*stard?s that were on your table, I should be down there tomorrow.

: : : :
: : : : I still think that the casino card room staff were rubbish though.
: Apart
: : : from
: : : : the lady that brought coffee, she was great.
: : : :
: : : : The other thing was that I was surprised how much of the final few

: : : : stacks were made up of top-ups. The concept of a 20 tournament is
: pretty
: : : much
: : : : irrelevant. Most if not all of the people in the final stages had paid

: fund
: : : is
: : : : smaller, but everyone is on an even footing.

Thanks for the offer, I'll drop you a line before I go along again, but like I say, I'll skip it for the time being.

I'm not completely put off, but it is, in some respects, more like a 60 tournament than the 10 tournament that I was expecting. Which makes it out of my limit.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the encouragement.

Strange ,
Firstly, well done in taking the plunge into the real world tournament scene, your experience at Southampton i assure you was a freak, i play Southampton and Southsea regularly and i can confirm commie boys comments that the majority of players are good people and some great characters once you know them, unfortunately any population has a minority of tosspots and we regretably have to tolerate ours. The card room staff are not the best currently, as commie explained, but rumour has it that JP from southsea may be moving to the card room at southampton after southseas closure. He is a great guy and things can only improve there if this actually happens. New players are the life blood, i always try and make them feel welcome at my tables, the thing is many of these so called established players forget that they were green once. Internet poker is fantastic for frequency and convenience, but the real buzz and sense of achievment can only be felt, in my opinion anyhow, in a live environment only.

Finally if a 20 comp is out of your limit, you are a very sensible guy to admit it, only play with what u can afford to lose. Why not limit yourself to just once a fortnight, you then have the option to play either a Tuesday or Thursday , both twenty comps, with the exception of the 1st thursday of the month which is a fifty comp.

I wish some of the players who regularly attend had your common sense, rather that them knowing its a twenty, but still insist on nipping anyone they can for an additional rebuy.

Don't give up on the live tournaments, you've done the toughest part of venturing into an unknown poker room, many are to afraid to do that. Do not let an obnoxious minority deprive you of an exciting and fun experience once you become a regular face.

Good Luck
