Who Got The Silly Hat?

The Christmas Cracker 2003, Luton
£150 Pot Limit Omaha
Report by Barny on Thursday, 11 December 2003 at 2:30 am

Nowadays all good poker festivals have snappy names and the ‘Luton Christmas Cracker’ is about as snappy as they get. On Tuesday night Ram and I were waiting for the pot limit hold-em to kick off and Ram got hold of three crackers from the restaurant where some friends of ours were enjoying the Christmas dinner. We pulled all three of them. Result? I still couldn’t win a single evens shot against him!

Everyone knows everyone in Luton, the tournaments are always lively good natured affairs and Carmel is the best of hosts. I was having so much fun on Tuesday that I hardly noticed the final table looming but suddenly there I was in my sixth hold-em final of The Tour, with average chips. Ram was two to my right and it wasn’t long before I found myself in a pot with him. This time I had my hand round the middle of the cracker and he had the torn end, but I still wound up with the empty bog-roll while he walked off with the novelty key-ring and the silly hat! He stormed through the rest of the field to take the fifteen grand and yet another trophy. That’s my boy.

Those of you who are old enough to remember when smoking was allowed in cinemas might share my fond recollections of those twisting wisps of smoke in front of you that added to the atmosphere, and provided a pleasing 3-D effect; and those hacking coughs that cut through the lonely darkness and enriched the sound track of the film. Who could forget the warm conviviality and relative privacy afforded by the comforting fog that used to fill the smoking carriages on the London Underground?
So its hats off to the Luton card room where, packed in tighter than Howard Plant’s vest, those of us who do not smoke our own can still enjoy the simple pleasures of secondary smoking. Don’t go changing.

Last night was the £150 pot limit Omaha and when I left Ram was the case Mobster. I wonder…

Update from The Mob...
Well no need to wonder any more. Not only did Ram make his third final in a row at this weeks Luton festival, he won the Pot Limit Omaha for back to back victories.
