You are the Tournament Director Series 3: Leaving the Table?

This one was provided by RobSamples on The Hendon Mob Forum. For anyone who doesn’t know Paul Daniels is a well known English magician who had a popular TV show in the 1980’s and David Blaine is a well known illusionist. Enjoy…

It's getting to the late stages of the celebrity poker club magicians special game. Paul Daniels is the BB and has roughly 60% of the total chips in play, The Great Suprendo is the SB and has 10% of the chips and lastly David Blaine is on the button and has 30% of the chips.

Blaine moves all-in and The Great Suprendo folds, Paul Daniels looks at his cards and declares that he likes them, not a lot, but he likes them. Daniels thinks for a while about whether to call. Meanwhile Blaine and Suprendo are showing each other magic tricks, The Great Suprendo does some lame shit with a hanky making it disappear as he says 'pif paf poof '. David Blaine is not impressed and says "Heh that's nothing, watch this", and levitates from his chair.

At this point Paul Daniels calls for a ruling claiming that Blaine has left the table and his hand should be dead. He proves his point by passing a metal hoop between David and his chair to show that they are not connected. The TD rules that Paul is angle shooting and as he declared he would like to 'call' for a ruling, the hand is live and Daniels must call Blaine’s all-in.

Was this the right ruling and why did nobody shoot David Blaine in the face?

Matt SavageMatt Savage:
Well I would not have forced him to call but his hand is still live and told him to act on his hand. I would then tell David to take his seat, as to why no one shot David Blaine in the face that on baffles me. :-)

Thomas KremserThomas Kremser:
I would call the clock on David Blaine to land back on his chair within 60 seconds, The Great Suprendo gets a warning for distracting the game and Paul Daniels gets a penalty for leaving his chair to check for passing the metal hoop OR I would show them MY best trick and disappear for a 30 minute break to call my colleagues for advice.

Dave LambDave Lamb:
I think that the TD can safely assume that things are not always as they seem in poker or magic. Blaine may not have actually left his chair or Paul’s metal hoop may not be solid. The hand is live.
“Calling for a ruling” should not obligate Paul to call a bet, I would let him make his own decision to call or fold.
Bullets would surely be caught in Blaine’s teeth or pass harmlessly through him but I do believe an attempt at his face would have been worth the shot.

Jeff LeighJeff Leigh:
The T.D’s ruling was almost right. Regardless of the stupid antics between “Twat 1 “ and “Twat 2 “ once Mr Blaine had moved all in Mr daniels only decsion was to decide whether to call or fold. I don'’ think it would be fair to shoot Mr Blaine without also “eliminating” Daniels and Mr Supernintendo” And with all 3 dead I would then award the pot to someone who needed the money like Tony Blair or David Beckham.

Jack EffelJack Effel:
If it can be determined by the dealer/table that he said, “call for a ruling” not just ‘call,’ I’m not forcing him to call, but he will still have an option to. I would give him a warning to be careful about using certain words at the table that could force him to accept an action on his hand that he may not have intended to.

Thomas LamatschThomas Lamatsch:
Thankfully I wasn’t TD overthere, because nothing is more difficult than ruling in celebrities games.
The verbal statement of Daniel “I like them” doesn’t force him to call the bet and to get up to show a magic trick doesn’t mean the hand is dead.
So the hand is live and I would call time for Daniel and giving him enough to finish his magic trick first and then making his action in the poker game.

The Mob Verdict

We'd like to thank the TDs for entering into the spirit of RobSamples's question. As comedians, they all make great tournament directors!

This is the last article in ‘You are The Tournament Director’ Series III. Series IV is already in the pipeline and we’ll also have some new faces in the panel of TDs giving their opinions.
